In an Effort to Control
2008

This series originated from my explorations of the University of Idaho's Steam Plant. I was preparing to teach linear perspective and came across the building while looking for an alternate drawing site for students. It's a multisensory experience to be in that large open space, suspended with three levels of grated catwalks, the smell of grease and burning wood, extreme heat, and an ever-present vibrating "hum". My attention was drawn to the protective wrappings around the pipes and valves (to control the tremendous pressures and heat contained within), yet which make the machinery virtually unrecognizable, almost organic.
